Falmouth Country Club Wedding

October 6, 2009

Kate and Aaron’s wedding at the Falmouth Country Club proved that big things do indeed come in small packages.  With 30 or so guests and four hours with yours truly, Kate and Aaron managed to give me almost a full day’s worth of images.

The color scheme for the wedding was one of my favorites – brown and green.  At each place setting there was a little dark brown box with a neat bow filled with chocolates.  With a nod to their honeymoon in Maui, Kate had the florist use tropical flowers in greens and browns with a red high light or two.  As the sun was slipping below the tree tops, Kate and Aaron exchanged vows and rings.  Kate was glowing, and Aaron couldn’t contain his smile – which made for great photos and a happy photographer!

As we were walking around the property, we talked about the night’s full moon.  Kate was keen to have me get a shot of it to use in her album.  Sure thing, I said, agreeing that the full moon would make a great image.  At the end of my time with them, I headed outside with my trusty tripod and started shooting the moon.  It wasn’t long before I became frustrated with my poor results.  As I was trying to get it right, I kept thinking about a film I’d seen about Ansel Adams where he described how he happened upon his legendary image, Moonrise, Hernandez.  In the interview Ansel Adams talked about how he couldn’t find his light meter and was worried about getting the exposure right.  Then the man remembered that HE KNEW THE LUMINANCE OF THE MOON.  This is what I’m thinking of as I’m stumbling around in the dark, unable to get the image I wanted.  Surely with my fancy digital camera I could capture Moonrise, Falmouth Country Club!  Suffice it to say, Ansel Adams I am not.  See for yourself (last image below).  After this wedding season slows down, I will definitely be getting to the bottom of my full moon issues!

*When writing this I wanted to make sure I remembered the Ansel Adams story correctly – I’d seen the film in a photo class in college, and let’s just say that college was a long time ago…  I Googled it and found the story here.*
